Space is the decisive category in modern architecture and the most abstract and difficult concept to transmit and represent. Thats why it has always been ambivalent and controversial to approach its discipline. Where to find help for these challenges? Maybe in art?
This heterogeneous group of young artists and curators, with very different nationalities and residences, have a common intentional and critical look at the urban spatiality. There, in the city, they spend their stories and their elements are motivation and inspiration. From various technical and non-urban architectural positions addressed as spatiality, as the challenge of catching places and build poetic. Textures, images, experiences and stories from their sensibilities are combined to achieve what Heidegger warned us: “… A site is only aplacewhen we appropriate culturally of it.”
In his book “The hidden dimension,” Edward Hall raised us from anthropology, the spatial experience in humans is not innate, but the result of environment and cultural learning. We live, live and understand the sense of space only from culture.
Contemporary art, and this smart group gathered in MARQ succeeds, she proposes skillfully run the viewer of your comfort zone and do part of the work, teasing, being uncomfortable, making accomplice. It is in this dimension where “Espacios ajenos.Lugares propios” takes all its power. The game and the spatial construction generated an opportunity to meet and synergy. The space becomes instead, it belongs and involves us, not as spectators, but from a role of participating necessary. The immersive experience perhaps the biggest challenge they posed to today expositivos- space becomes reality.
It is in these crossings and crossings where we see, from the MARQ, a field of fruitful exploration and always unsettling between art, architecture and design. Gaston Bachelard taught us that we have much to keep learning in this area.
Welcome to the appropriation of space from the art that creates places.
