The Brazil of the 1950s and 1960s represents a radical departure into the modern world. The roots of Brazilian art can be traced back to Europe and the inspiration of Constructivism and the Bauhaus. While European artists developed a utopian language characterised by symbols and forms, Brazilian artists by contrast extended the field of abstraction in another direction: their approach was more poetic, sensory and personal. Even today, many
contemporary artists relate to the Brazilian avant-garde and engage with it critically, because no other country has implemented the modern vision of the future as radically as Brazil.
»Avante Brasil« shows a glimpse of the vibrant young art scene in Brazil and presents artistic positions that avail themselves of an established, international vocabulary.
The exhibited artists are already well known in Brazil, whereas here In Germany they are being premiered.
The exhibition itself is the result of intensive research; it is by no means a German view on Brazil, but was developed in close collaboration with Brazilian curators.
