With Colombia as the special guest nation at ARCOmadrid 2015 in February, Colombia’s contemporary art scene will be explored at a range of exhibitions, presentations, screenings or performances in Madrid this spring, while also being the subject of a series of talks, panels discussions, professional meetings and special gallery programmes during the art fair itself, which will take place from February 25 to March 1.

With the support of the Colombian embassy in Spain and the Colombian Ministry of Culture, Madrid’s leading arts institutions will feature Colombian artists in their programming over the course of the coming months. Museums and art centers such as the Reina Sofía Museum, CA2M, Matadero, Conde Duque, Tabacalera, CentroCentro, La Casa Encendida and the Instituto Cervantes will feature Colombian artists such as Oscar Muñoz, Miguel Angel Rojas, Oscar Murillo, Doris Salcedo and Felipe Arturo in a variety of solo and group exhibitions and related activities.

During ARCOmadrid—now in its 34th year, and known as a key meeting place for galleries, curators, directors of museum and biennials and international collectors—Colombia, as well as issues of the larger Latin American art context—will be the focus of the fair’s extensive programme of talks, discussions and professional encounters. The professional programme will count on the participation of leading art world figures such as Cuauhtémoc Medina, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Simon Castets, João Fernandes, Pablo León de la Barra, Adam Szymczyk, Chus Martínez, Adam Budak, Ivo Mesquita, Adriano Pedrosa, Ziba Ardalan, Jens Hoffmann or Bice Curiger.

In addition, Solo Projects programme directors Irene Hofmann and Lucía Sanromán have invited emerging Latin American curators Miguel A. López, Kiki Mazzucchelli and Emiliano Valdés to identify the most up-to-date issues in contemporary Latin American art, and to use those themes in shaping the selection of galleries while presenting the results of their work during the professional meetings. By involving curators and art world professionals in structuring its programmes, ARCOmadrid continues to develop new forms of dialogue and debate, while the ideas generated and shared during the encounters in the hands-on context of an art fair give rise to projects and collaborations that continue throughout the year.

Colombian art will be highlighted during the fair itself in a special section of ten galleries selected by Juan A. Gaitán. In this section—which includes work by artists such as Carlos Motta, Carolina Caycedo and Icaro Zorbar—ARCOmadrid continues to emphasize gallery presentations of single artists or pairs of artists in dialogue with each other, offering visitors a singular opportunity to view artworks being created today. Such highly focused stands have become a hallmark of ARCOmadrid, and are found at every level of the fair, starting with the fair’s Solo/Duo programme and also in sections such as Opening, Solo Projects Latin America, and the fair’s General Programme, which this year will include over 200 galleries from around the world.

OpeningARCOmadrid mantiene su espacio dedicado a los proyectos y artistas emergentes con la sección temática #Opening. Los comisarios Luiza Teixeira de Freitas (Portugal/Reino Unido) y Chris Sharp (México) han seleccionado 28 galerías con menos de siete años de trayectoria,procedentes de América y Europa, que presentarán una visión de la escena más joven. Este año, #Opening se podría caracterizar por tres términos clave: rigor, diversidad y descubrimiento. Hemos trabajado muy de cerca con galerías de toda Europa, Latinoamérica y Norteamérica con el fin de crear la edición más apasionante posible de #Opening. La idea ha sido invitar a artistas concretos con quienes ya tenemos relaciones laborales previas, o solicitar propuestas a las galerías que consistan en presentaciones de uno o dos artistas. Pensamos que esta combinación de familiaridad y rigor convertirá esta sección en una particularmente fuerte, en la que la claridad y la coherencia de todos y cada uno de los proyectos pueden ser mutuamente beneficiosas para todos los implicados: artistas, galeristas y público en general. Y es más, persiguiendo una de las metas de #Opening, como es dar a conocer a artistas emergentes y consolidados a un nuevo público, creemos que estas presentaciones focalizadas ayudan a las posibilidades de descubrimento.
