The Wardrobe and the Mattress
04.09-30.11/2013
Maison Hermès, Tokyo
A joint exhibition of Chilean architect Smiljan Radic and sculptress Marcela Correa will be held at the Maison Hermès in Ginza, Tokyo, on its 8th floor forum. From September 4th to November 30th.
The pair have chosen two items of furniture as the subject of this exhibition; the wardrobe with its inner hoard of belongings, the past and recollections, and the mattress that lures into dreams whomever lays their body upon it. Together in this artifice they depict the realm of memory. Sculptures portray overgrown wardrobes or mattresses whose memories appear to have been extracted and given tangible form. Other installations include a series of photographs entitled “Fragile Construction” that have captured the title subject in numerous urban locations.
Smiljan Radic was born in Santiago, Chile in 1965. He graduated from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile before going on to study architecture at the University Institute of Architecture Venice. His exhibitions have been held in China, Spain and Tokyo. Radic was named Honorary Fellowship of the American Institute of Architects in 2009. Marcela Correa was also born in Santiago, Chile in 1963 and studied sculptures at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile graduate school. She is based in Chile. Radic and Correa have previously worked together and presented sculptures and visual works. They also held a joint exhibit at the 2010 Venice Biennale of Architecture.
