Glamourous Picnic, Site-Specific Installation, Randall’s Island Park, New York

Glamourous Picnic celebrates and contemporizes the time-honored ritual that encompasses a picnic. Using the iconic checkered tablecloth pattern, artist Gabriela Bertiller covered a group of custom designed concrete picnic tables with red and white iridescent glass tiles, creating a conceptual, colorful and enhanced setting for a picnic in Randall’s Island Park.

Randall’s Island Park is situated on the East River in New York City and is surrounded by the boroughs of the Bronx, Queens and Manhattan. The park serves as a common ground for the New York community to gather and rejoice, therefore the idea of a beautified picnic space is fitting for the area. Visitors to the installation have the opportunity to enjoy a different outdoor experience within an artistic environment.

Glamourous Picnic is comprised of three picnic tables each representing one of the three boroughs that surround Randall’s Island Park.

(The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, a two-part environmental art exhibition on view during the summers of 2011 and 2012 along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park. FLOW has been made possible through a generous grant from the Rockefeller Foundation’s, New York City Cultural Innovation Fund (CIF) and through support from Made Event.)
